What metro wayfinding taught us about clarity
Transit systems have to be understood by a stranger, in a hurry, in a second language. Every brand could learn from that constraint.
A metro map is a brand working under the harshest possible conditions: a stressed stranger, moving fast, who cannot afford to misread it. That pressure produces remarkable clarity.
The lesson is subtraction. Great wayfinding shows you only what you need at the moment you need it, and hides everything else until later.
Colour does heavy lifting, but only because it is used with discipline - one meaning per colour, held consistently across the whole system.
Most marketing sites would be transformed by asking a single transit question: what does this person need to know right now, and what can wait?
